About five minutes after takeoff from Antananarivo-Ivato Airport, the twin engine aircraft went out of control and crashed in an open field located in Ampangabe, some 10 km southwest of the airfield. The aircraft was totally destroyed upon impact and all five occupants were killed. They were engaged in a training flight with one instructor and two pilots under instruction on board.

Circumstances:

The aircraft was performing a special flight from Toliara to the capital city Antananarivo with 4 pax and a crew of two on behalf of the company Magrama (Marbres & Granites de Madagascar). Two minutes after takeoff, the aircraft crashed and burst into flames 1,500 metres from the runway end. All 6 occupants were killed. Among them, 4 Italians and 2 Madagascar citizens. It seems that one of the engine exploded after takeoff.

Shortly after liftoff, while climbing to a height of 100 feet, one of the engine caught fire and exploded. The airplane stalled and crashed in a prairie located about 720 meters past the runway end. Three crew members and 39 passengers were killed, among them Albert Sylla, the Malagasy Minister of Foreign Affairs. The three crew members who were killed were Mr. Chevrier, captain, Mr. Turin, mechanic and Mr. Goirand, radio navigator.
Probable cause:
Explosion of an engine at a critical stage of flight, just after liftoff, caused the aircraft to stall. The cause of the explosion remains unknown.
