The airplane was engaged in a SAR operation, looking for an Italian pilot missing from the previous day. While flying north of the Tunisian coast, it was shot down by a British fighter and crashed into the sea north of La Galite Island. All five crew members found refuge in a dinghy and reached Tunisia three days later. The airplane sank and was lost.
