On final approach to RAF Martlesham Heath, the Walrus stalled and crashed in a field. The aircraft was wrecked while the crew fate remains unknown.
Probable cause:
Loss of control on final approach caused by an engine failure.

Circumstances:
The airplane departed RAF Linton-on-Ouse at 1723LT on November 15 on an operation to Genoa. While returning to base the following night, it ran out of fuel. The crew abandoned the airplane that crashed near RAF Martlesham Heath and was destroyed. Six crew members were injured and the pilot was drowned after he fell into the River Debden.

Then airplane departed RAF Scampton at 0116LT on an operation to Duisburg. It was hit by the German Flak, which knocked out two engines, and on return, the Lancaster flew through tree tops and crashed at 0434LT in a field located 3 km northwest of RAF Martlesham Heath. A crew was killed, two others were injured and four bailed out in the vicinity of Orford.

While returning to base the following night, it was probably shot down by an intruder and crashed near RAF Martleham Heath. Five crew members were killed and a sixth was seriously injured. The only survivor died on September 1st from injuries sustained.
