Shortly after lift off, the aircraft went out of control and crashed on a depot. All six crew members were killed and 15 people on the ground as well.

The aircraft was flying in formation with another RAF Lancaster registered PB461. While cruising over the south part of Norway, the aircraft went out of control and crashed on the slope of a wooded hill. All seven crew members were killed.

The crew was engaged in a gunnery exercise from RAF Fulbeck. En route, while cruising at an altitude of 1,200 feet, the starboard engine failed. As the captain was unable to maintain a safe altitude and could not return to his base, he decided to attempt an emergency landing in Fishtoft Drove, north of Boston. The aircraft came to rest in a field and was damaged beyond repair while all six crew members were unhurt.

Probable cause:

Failure of the starboard engine.

The pilot departed RAF Waddington on a solo training exercise. En route, weather conditions deteriorated and the pilot was instructed to bail out. He abandoned the airplane that entered a dive and crashed east of RAF Fulbeck. The pilot was uninjured.
