Vlieland Island

The airplane departed RAF Hemswell at 1813LT on an operation to Hamburg. Approaching the Dutch coast, it was shot down by the German Flak and crashed into the sea some 5 km off Vlieland Island. All six crew members were killed.

The airplane departed RAF Swinderby at 1627LT on an operation to Berlin. While returning to base in the late evening and flying along the Dutch coast, it was shot down by a German fighter and crashed into the sea some 10 km off Vlieland Island. All seven crew members were killed.

Both airplane collided and crashed into the sea some 50 km northwest of Vlieland Island. All four crew members as well as both pilots of the German fighter were killed.

Over the target area, it was damaged by the German Flak and while returning home, it was shot down by a German fighter and crashed into the North Sea some 35 km northwest of Vlieland Island. Five crew members were killed and three others became PoW.
