Skitten AFB

The airplane departed RAF Skitten to bomb a water production plant located in Vemork, Norway (Operation Freshman), and was towing a Horsa glider. Over the region of Helleland, the crew encountered severe icing conditions. The airplane went out of control and crashed on the slope of Mt Jonsoknuten located 6 km east of Helleland. All seven crew members were killed.

The crew departed Wick on a training mission to RAF Skitten. While performing a single engine approach, the crew inadvertently feathered the wrong propeller, causing the airplane to stall and to crash one mile short of runway. Both crew members were injured.

The crew was completing a local test flight out from RAF Skitten when the airplane crashed in unknown circumstances in Castletown, about 16 km northwest of the airbase. The airplane was destroyed and all three crew members were killed.
