The airplane was engaged in a paratrooper mission over Sicily, on behalf of the 60th Troop Carrier Group, 12th Air Force. It transported paratroopers of the British 1st Parachute Brigade, the 'Red Devils', to a drop zone located near the Primosole Bridge, Sicily, on Operation 'Fustian'. It was shot down by antiaircraft fire and crashed into the sea off Sicily. All occupants were rescued.
