Circumstances:
The crew departed RAF Ossington on a night navigation exercise. While cruising at an altitude of 2,000 feet, the twin engine airplane collided with a RAF Lancaster. Registered L7545, it was carrying a crew of eight who were performing a training mission out from RAF Wigsley. Following the collision, both airplanes dove into the ground and crashed in a field located 3 km southeast of RAF Melton Mowbray. All 10 crew members in both airplanes were killed.

Due to negligence, both crew were unable to see and avoid each other.

Circumstances:
The pilot was performing a night solo training flight out from RAF Ossington. En route, he lost his orientation and while descending, the airplane collided with trees and crashed in a wooded area located near Matlock. The pilot was killed.

Sgt George Howard McIlraith, pilot.
Probable cause:
Controlled flight into terrain after the pilot got disoriented in flight.

Circumstances:
The airplane departed RAF Leeming at 1716LT on an operation to Lorient. Both starboard engines failed and on return, the airplane crashed upon landing at RAF Ossington and was destroyed. All seven crew members escaped uninjured.
