Circumstances:
The single engine aircraft departed New Delhi at 0842LT on an ambulance flight to Bangkok with two pilots and three doctors on board. A refueling stop was completed at Calcutta Airport. En route to Bangkok-Don Mueang Airport, while cruising at FL270, the crew contacted ATC and requested permission to divert to Kamphaeng Saen Airport due to engine problems. The permission was granted and the crew initiated the descent. On short final, the airplane crashed in a wooded area located 1,100 metres short of runway 21 threshold, bursting into flames. All five occupants were injured while the aircraft was destroyed. Few hours later, the copilot died from injuries sustained.
Probable cause:
This accident occurred as a result of:
- Looseened B-nut surrounding the Torque Limiter, maybe due to improper maintenance, resulting in oil leaking in the engine transmission system until the engine lose power and shut down.
- Due to a lack of officers, the aerodrome and runway lighting were not turned on. As a result, pilots were unable to see the airport or runway.
