Circumstances:
The airplane departed Adak on a flight to Elmendorf AFB with an intermediate stop in Cold Bay. In the late evening, while approaching Elmendorf AFB, the crew encountered poor weather conditions with snow falls. A first attempt to land was aborted and during a second circuit to land, while too low, the airplane collided with cottonwood trees and crashed in a swampy area located 4 km southwest of the airbase. All 19 occupants were killed, 15 enlisted men and four crew members.

The airplane departed Naknek Airport on a flight to Elmendorf AFB, carrying eight crew members. The radio contact was lost with the crew about 30 minutes after departure. En route, weather conditions were poor with strong winds up to 112 km/h. As the airplane failed to arrive at destination, SAR operation were initiated but eventually suspended due to poor weather conditions and heavy snow in the area. The following summer 1943, SAR operations were resumed and the wreckage was found on the slope of a 609 metres high mountain located south of Kokhanok. All eight occupants have been killed.

In poor visibility, it impacted the slope of a mountain located about 40 km northeast of Cold Bay Airport. All 16 occupants were killed. Six sets of remains were recovered, but only five could be identified. The other ten occupants remain unaccounted for.
