The airplane departed RAF Skellingthorpe at 2240LT on July 9 on an operation to Gelsenkirchen. It was hit by the German Flak over the target, sustaining damage to three engines. A fire broke out and the order to bail out was given, Sgt King complying immediately. The flames were then brought under control and course was resumed. Subsequently, at 0350LT, the Lancaster was ditched some 7 km off Hastings. All six crew members were rescued while Sgt King was killed.
