The four engine aircraft Harbin SH-5 (Shuishang Hongzha 5) was engaged in a training mission off Qingdao with a crew of five on board. In unknown circumstances, the seaplane crashed in the Jiaozhou Bay few km offshore, killing all five occupants.

The twin engine aircraft departed Jinan Airport for a local training flight, carrying six pilot under supervision and one instructor. At noon, in unclear circumstances, the aircraft struck the slope of Mt Huluyu (540 metres high) and crashed. All seven occupants were killed.

The approach to Jinan Airport was completed in limited visibility due to freezing fog. On final, the aircraft was too high and landed too far down the runway. Unable to stop within the remaining distance, it overran and came to rest in a ravine, bursting into flames. Three passengers were seriously injured while 38 other occupants were killed.
Probable cause:
Wrong approach configuration on part of the flying crew who continued the approach and landed the aircraft too down the runway, reducing the landing distance available. Failure of the crew to initiate a go-around and poor visibility due to freezing fog were considered as contributing factors.

The descent to Qingdao Airport was performed in poor weather conditions with low clouds and low visibility. On final approach, while too low, the aircraft hit the slope of a mountain and crashed, killing all 43 occupants. According to the US Authorities, the cloud base was very low and the weather conditions at the time of the accident were below minima published by the US Navy. Due to low visibility, the crew was unable to distinguish the mountain and was completing the approach at a too low altitude without any visual contact with the ground.
