Circumstances:
The airplane departed RAF Kaldaðarnes at 0630LT on an anti submarine patrol flight over the Atlantic Ocean. Three minutes after takeoff, while climbing to a height of 100 feet, both engines failed. The airplane stalled and crashed on the frozen Ölfusá River, about 1,600 metres northwest of the airfield, bursting into flames. Three crew members were killed and a fourth was injured.

Probable cause:
