Circumstances:
The crew departed Seymour Airfield on a night training flight, practicing landings with the newly installed airfield lighting system. During the takeoff procedure, the airplane collided with the vertical stabilizer and rudder of a parked B-24 registered 41-23798. The crew continued to climb to an altitude of 5,000 feet, burned fuel then turned back to the airbase. A first attempt to land was aborted and the crew initiated a go around. During a second attempt to land, the airplane rolled to the left and crashed about 600 metres short of runway, bursting into flames. Four crew members were killed and one was injured. A 20 mph crosswind was present at the time of the accident.
