Circumstances:
The aircraft left Anapa airport at 1505LT and reached rapidly the altitude of 11,700 metres. Crew sent a mayday message and the aircraft crashed in an open field near Novgorodskoye, Ukraine. All 170 occupants were killed. At the time of the accident, severe thunderstorm activity with turbulence was reported in the area. It seems the aircraft was over stressed and stalled.
Probable cause:
The cause of the crash was the loss of control in the manual flight mode with super critical angles of attack, causing a stall with the subsequent transition to a flat spin and collision with the ground with a large vertical velocity. Factors were considered poor crew coordination, and failure to follow the instructions in the Aeroplane Flight Manual to prevent a stall. Also, the crew training methods used were insufficient to demonstrate the dangers of manual flight at high altitudes.
