Circumstances:
The crew was on his way to Salamaua to carry radio equipment, in formation with a second RAAF Catalina registered A24-8. Approaching Salamaua, the seaplane was shot down by the pilot of a Japanese fighter and crashed into the sea few hundred yards off shore. A crew member was able to bail out and was later recovered while all eight other occupants were killed.
