Circumstances:
On a positioning flight from Ice Station Molodyozhnaya to Ice Station Mirny (distance 2,020 km) when unexpectedly strong headwind (140 km/h) and severe icing caused the aircraft to run out of fuel after more than 10 hours. Crew attempted an emergency landing on the Filippi glacier 240 km west of Ice Station Mirny (at S66.833 E88.00) in white-out conditions, but the aircraft crashed into the surface of the glacier and was completely destroyed. All 5 crew and the sole passenger (an aircraft mechanic) were killed. Wreck found some days later.
Probable cause:
Fuel exhaustion due to strong head wind.
