Circumstances |
Crew was engaged in the Cold Response military exercice involving 16,000 soldiers from 15 countries, and was performing a link flight between Harstad-Narvik Airport in Norway and Kiruna, Sweden. At 1443LT, crew contacted Kiruna Tower and thirteen minutes later, aircraft disappeared from radar screens. Up to 17MAR2012, SAR did not find any trace of the aircraft or its crew. According to Norwegian and Swedish Authorities, it appears the aircraft hit a mountain side in the region of Drakryggen, 80 km west of Kiruna, near the Mt Kebnekaise, the tallest in Sweden. At the time of the accident, weather conditions were poor with clouds, low visibility and strong winds. |
