Circumstances

|
On approach to Stansted, visibility was poor and the crew diverted to East Midlands. On approach to this second airport, the crew descended too low and the aircraft struck the ground 90 metres left of runway 27. On impact, the right gear was sheared off and the crew decided to divert to Birmingham where a safe landing was performed. The crew disconnected both autopilot on a CAT III approach and passed the minimum safe altitude without terrain in sight. |
